A Milestone for Sustainable Agriculture: Hemp Seed Approval

At North Carolina Healthy Alternatives Association, we are excited to announce a groundbreaking achievement for the hemp industry: the tentative approval of Hemp Seed Meal (HSM) for use in the diets of laying hens. This landmark decision marks a significant milestone in sustainable agriculture and animal feed innovation.

A Major Victory for the Hemp Industry

After three years of rigorous evaluation and relentless advocacy by the Hemp Feed Coalition (HFC) and its partners, the Association of American Feed Control Officials has granted approval for the use of Hemp Seed Meal (HSM) in laying hen feed. This approval, sanctioned by 48 states with 2 abstentions, opens new doors for farmers nationwide, allowing them to incorporate HSM into up to 20% of their hens' diets.

The Role of Hemp in Sustainable Agriculture

Hemp's inclusion in animal feed is not just a win for the hemp industry but a triumph for sustainable agriculture. Hemp provides a crop rotation option with lower input needs, which enhances soil health and disease control. This promotes agricultural sustainability and supply chain flexibility, benefiting the entire agricultural community.

Nutritional Benefits for Laying Hens

Hemp Seed Meal is incredibly nutritious for laying hens, offering essential vitamins, minerals, and a complete protein profile. The inclusion of HSM in hens' diets can significantly improve egg quality, making it a valuable addition to animal feed. This innovation reflects a broader commitment to enhancing the quality and sustainability of agricultural practices.

A Collective Effort

This achievement is a testament to the tireless efforts of the HFC and all the dedicated individuals in the hemp industry. Special thanks go to Bill Bookout of the National Animal Supplements Council for his unwavering support and dedication to advancing this crucial initiative.

Moving Forward: Continued Advocacy and Innovation

The approval of Hemp Seed Meal for laying hens is a major step forward for the hemp industry, paving the way for further innovations in animal feed and sustainable agriculture. NCHAA remains committed to supporting such initiatives and advocating for policies that enhance the use of hemp in various sectors.
